Land birds such as Cuckoos and Barn swallows migrate through wide landscapes: tundras, grasslands, forests, deserts. From breeding to wintering grounds these species fly mainly overland, in broad fronts, from the Arctic to the tropics; from Europe, over The Middle East to Africa.
THREATS
Land birds are vulnerable to changes in the wider landscape. Agricultural intensification, desertification, deforestation and climate change are causing dramatic declines.
CONSERVATION ACTION
BirdLife is working hard to restore natural European countryside and to reduce the pressure of hunting in the Mediterranean. In Africa the problems of desertification and extensive deforestation are being addressed.
